Sometimes you hear songs that are so memorable, even if they were only soundtracks from old cartridge games:

But I absolutely love it when I see that others feel the same way and then rebuild the originals in real life:

Mega Man 2: Dr. Wily’s Theme (in a very creative presentation)

The Legend of Zelda: Overworld Theme (played by the fucking London Philharmonic Orchestra)

And my favourite, Born with the Gift of Magic , a cheesy title for a condensed orchestral presentation of the major musical themes in Final Fantasy VI; I think it’s just fantastic.

I actually made a CD of all the music from FF6 from some program that converted MIDI files to MP3 with an open-source instrument set and used to listen to it in my car.

Fuckin hell, DKC has epic music, too. It’s just not the first game that comes to my mind since I never owned it - it was the game I rented here and there but mostly played at a friend’s house.

David Wise’s score for the entire trilogy is fantastic. I love the fan mashups, too:

I’ve got all the FF music I can lay my hands on (the good performed stuff, not the raw synthesized stuff). Listen to The advantage much?

I find myself whistling Moon Patrol sometimes when I’m on a dull repetitive project and envision the buggy rolling along in my head ;)

Hey! I found a PDF of the Top Gear 2 instruction manual! Pages 15-18 made 10-year-old me chuckle: “Stop taking stuff off of your mom’s car!”

Yes! First thing that comes to mind is FF3/6, the theme during the opening credits, when they’re marching to Narshe in the Magitek armors. Such a brilliant piece.

Also, pretty much everything from the Megaman X series.

I rarely played any Sega games, but now that the Sonic series is seeing a resurgence, I’m appreciating the music from there as well.

It’s such good background music as well but still holds up to listen to just to listen to.

100%. I think you might like this one: Guy does play thrus of the games, with full hard rock over lay. It’s awesome.

Also, I can listen to this version Contra’s Snowfield pretty much on repeat.

Long time fan of Secret of Mana here. It’s a colorful, diverse, aesthetically pleasing game with soundtrack to match. Here’s hoping they can keep it together for the soon-to-be-released remake.

Though as far as covers go, this has held out as one of my top favorites for some time. It’s hard to beat a Mega Man 2's entire soundtrack played live alongside someone plaything through the game.

Rock/metal-ish covers of Mega Man songs are always badass. Dat Spark Mandrill and Storm Eagle...

I’m surprised that professional guitarists like Joe Satriani (you know, the guys that can really shred) haven’t done video game music like this since it’s really right up their alley.

You god damn nerd, I do stuff like that too.

I’m the kind of guy who loved Initial D so much that I’d have eurobeat lined up for my commute back and forth to work.

Sometimes, if I need to focus on something, I’ll play background music by Smooth McGroove because they’re excellent covers of iconic video game music.

Heck, I remember listening to the Return of the King soundtrack for a while just because I thought it was incredibly well done.

Converting MIDI files though? I’ve never done that.

I didn’t have Sega growing up and I only ever really knew one person who had a Genesis growing up. Sonic does have some killer music, though. However, I really was terrible at those games - I’m definitely a Super Mario man.

Yes I am a nerd :) This was back in 2001 or so. Someone somewhere had recreated all of the music on a MIDI keyboard and uploaded the files to an FF message board. I remember QuickTime would play them back but that didn’t help for the car so I had to make them into MP3's then I burned them on a huge external SCSI CD-R drive. Still have the disc:

Seriously, check out the rest of his channel. He’s incredibly talented, and has covered nearly every MM game.

My guess would be that they’re too expensive, or they would want a large piece of the action (title credit, etc.). I know Trent Reznor, and some older industrial artists (Ministry, KMFDM, Fear Factory) have lent their talents to games.
